What a pity that this little gem of a café is not a 24/7 establishment.
The food is honest to goodness all American fare and the portions
are generous. The patrons tend to be the locals who have become accustomed
to the café's friendly service.

Gumbo Pot
Farmer's Market,
6333 W. Third St.

Traditional gumbo and other southern fare, subs and seafood in the
unpretentious ambiance of Farmer's Market. The service is lacking
but the meals are worth the insults.

Ivy
113 N. Robertson Blvd.
Los Angeles
(310) 274-8303
Once you have been seated at a patio table, you feel like you have
finally arrived. Lunchtime patrons are a mish mash of famous and on-their-way-up
movie types. Insist on patio seating because inside dining is the
equivalent of banishment to Siberia. The Ivy is not known for the
food but the ambiance, although the dishes are OK. Try the corn chowder
if you are after gastronomic satisfaction.
Open daily for lunch and dinner. Full bar. Valet parking. AE, CB,

Lawry's
the Prime Rib
100 N. La Cienega Blvd.
Beverly Hills
(310) 652-2827
Perhaps the only thing worthwhile the British cuisine has offered
the world is the Yorkshire Pudding. Well, at Lawry's, you can get
the best Yorkshire Pudding this side of the Pond along with the
most lovable Prime Rib that could rival any Yanks'. They carve the
prime rib tableside, which adds to your anxious anticipation to
dig in. Lawry's has been one of the premier restaurants of the city
and continues to dazzle. Mon.-Thurs. 5-10 p.m., Fri. 5-11 p.m.,
Sat. 4:30-11 p.m., Sun. 4-10 p.m. Full bar. AE, CB, DC, MC, V.

Le
Petit Bistro
631 N. La Cienega Blvd.
W. Hollywood
(310) 289-9797
Is it possible to have a restaurant so perfect that it becomes too
usual and ordinary. The service is good and the dishes well prepared.
But therein lies the problem. If you are jaded and want your eatery
a little on the extraordinary side, this is not the place for you.
Regardless, give it a try if eating well at a good price is more
important then the ambiance.

Lucques
8474 Melrose Ave.
West Hollywood
(323) 655-6277
The problem with this restaurant is an over abundance of excellent
dishes. How are you expected to choose between so many different
masterful dishes such as quail and polenta, potatoes parisienne,
gnocchi and grilled sardines. The deserts are equally sinful and
sophisticated.

Pace
2100 Laurel Canyon Blvd.
Los Angeles
(323) 654-8583
The patio area is intimate and the dining room reminds you of a
speak easy. The restaurant is tucked away in Laurel Canyon but super
fresh ingredients and excellent attention to detail makes finding
the place worthwhile. We recommend that you try the pizzas if you
are into comfort food.
Dinner 5:3011 p.m. seven nights. Beer and wine. AE, CB, DC, MC,

Pho
Bac Huynh
11819 Wilshire Blvd.
Los Angeles
(310) 477-9379
One bite of the traditional Pho dish and you understand why the
West was fascinated with Vietnam for so long. The location, which
is in a mini mall in Brentwood, deceives you because the food is
definitely uptown and as authentic as you would want. The service
is great and they aim to please.

Los Angeles, CA
(310) 289-9910
If your meals must include meat, do yourself a favor and make a
U-turn at the door; this restaurant is for veggie lovers. The décor
is a killer and very trendy. Service is friendly and fast and even
for the carnivores among you, if you keep an open mind, some dishes
may just change how you think about healthy eating.

Shah Abbas
400 S. San Vicente Blvd.
W. Hollywood CA
(310) 659-3242
If you don't know your Persian food, you will be confused by an over
abundance of Polos (fragrant long grain rice prepared to perfection).
There is Albaloo Polo, Shirin Polo, Zeresk Polo, Adas Polo and Sabzi
Polo to name a few. The portions are really for two. What is missing
in ambiance is made up in exotic dishes. Service is shoddy at best,
but stop complaining and eat.

Westwood

Out of this world Italian fare, served by friendly staff and great
location. We only wish this neck of Westwood could return to the glamour
of yesterday but with restaurants like Tanino, maybe it will soon.
The wine list is a match for the delightful cuisine.
